Tri-State SCUBA
Frequently Asked Questions
How old do I have to be to dive?
Minimum age for Scuba certification is 12. There is no upper age limit. It depends on an individuals personal level of fitness. This is one of the only sports I know of that we can have a child, mother and father, even grandma and grandpa all taking class together. Then participating in a non competitive activity that they can all enjoy equally. In this sport, the only loser is the one who didn't take the class! How long does it take to get certified?
For full Certification, it normally takes 2 weekends. The first weekend is spent doing academics and pool work. Then on another weekend we travel to do the required 5 open water dives. Standards require that it take 2 days to complete the "checkout" dives. We may be able to arrange different scheduling if weekends don't work for you!How long is certification valid?
This is a lifetime certification. There are no re-certification requirements. However, we recommend that you come do a refresher with us if you haven't been diving in over a year. How soon after class do I have to do the open water dives, and can they be done elsewhere?
Every student successfully completing class has up to a year from the end of class to do their open water dives. We can refer students worldwide to do their open water dives if they prefer.---The place and method of the dives will determine the cost of the dives, different locations have different prices. If you have a particular destination in mind, let us know and we'll attempt to get you information on that location.I'm not a great swimmer, can I still learn to dive?
Learning to dive does require basic swimming skills, however you don't have to be a "great" swimmer. Comfort level in the water is the key. If you are unduly afraid of the water, or in the class to please someone else, diving may not be a good idea. You have to want to do this. If you do, then we'll find a way to get you comfortable with the equipment, and teach you how to handle situations that may come up, and how to avoid problems before they develop.Where do you dive around here?
There is some limited diving in Nebraska, some in Texas, and in New Mexico where we do our checkouts. Some people dive sandpits, and some dive Lake Wilson up by Hays. Unfortunately, there isn't good diving close at hand. We travel to places like Cozumel for good diving.Do you have a question not listed here? Just click on our e-mail address below, and ask.
